Children, Teenagers & Young People

It can be daunting for young people to talk about their emotions. I’m here to help.

I am a person-centred therapist and my approach trusts you, the young person. I recognise that you are the expert on yourself and what you need to live a happy and fulfilled life. So I don’t try to change your thinking or tell you what to do.

I’m familiar with many of the specific issues that can drive young people to look for outside help and support. That’s why I offer a number of different pathways for exploration such as sand tray work and creative arts.

During our sessions, I will create a warm, inviting, safe environment where you feel safe to explore all aspects of yourself, as well as any issues you might be facing. To do this, I will:

  • listen to your situation with empathy and understanding

  • be honest and open in how I experience you and your world

  • accept and value you fully as a person

In addition, I’ve worked with young clients who have a diagnosis of, or feel they have neuro-divergent traits. I can offer a safe space where we can sit side-by-side if direct eye contact is too much. Or we can meet online if you would feel safer talking in a familiar space. We can also explore reasonable adjustments that would make you feel comfortable.

Here are some of the areas for which I provide young people’s counselling in Nottingham:

Exam Stress

GCSE and A Level examinations are incredibly stressful times in a young person’s life. What’s more, the long-term effects on learning and exam results because of the pandemic are still being felt. In addition, university can be very daunting, and coursework deadlines and exams take place at a time when low mood and anxiety can become heightened.

Anxiety & Depression

These can be brought on by a whole range of factors including social media, bullying, friendships, relationships and low self-esteem.

Harmful Behaviours

These can include disordered eating, self-injury and substance misuse.

Trauma

This can be both direct and indirect and covers experiences of abuse - verbal, physical, sexual and emotional, or witnessing a traumatic event.

Gender, Sexual & Relationship Diversity

This can be a time for discovery and exploration, with young people experiencing changes and a growing awareness.

For all clients under the age of 18, an adult needs to be present for the contracting phase of the first full session.
